About Littleton, one of the great places to live in the Metro Area... |
| Littleton was settled in the 1860's by farmers homesteading the fertile land along the South Platte River on the southern edge of metropolitan Denver. At that time there were only 245 residents! Gold was found in Little Dry Creek about the same time, increasing the flow of people moving west.
Today the town of Littleton is the county seat for Arapahoe County. However the mailing address of "Littleton" includes many residents of large areas of unincorporated Jefferson County.
Located in the southwestern portion of the metropolitan area, Littleton attracts residents who want to be closer to the mountains than Denver proper. Parks and recreational areas abound. Golfers have a wide choice of public and private courses from which to choose. Close by is one of the most dramatic and beautiful parks in the state, Roxborough State Park. Another unique park in southern unincorporated Littleton is Chatfield State Park which boasts an expansive marina and a popular hot-air balloon launch in addition to miles of hiking and biking trails.
More information about Littleton can be found on the Chamber of Commerce web site. | Ken Caryl Ranch Neighborhood
This picturesque valley, which is located southwest of the Denver Metropolitan Area in Jefferson County, straddles Ken Caryl Avenue east and west of today's C-470. It was first a home to Native Americans who probably camped here in warmer months to take advantage of the cooler 7,300-foot altitude and an abundance of wildlife that still contributes to the beauty of the area. The rich history of the neighborhood includes a stage stop for freight and passengers heading west. In the early 1900s cattle baron and Rocky Mountain News publisher John Shaffer called the valley home and named the ranch he built there for his sons, Ken and Caryl. The original Ranch consists of older homes located between Kipling Street west to Simms. Later development extended west past the "hogback" into the secluded valley nestled in the foothills west of C-470.
The Johns Manville Corporation purchased Ken Caryl ranch in 1971 to create a master-planned community to complement its new facility located just south in Deer Creek Canyon, now the present site of Lockheed-Martin.
New home construction and infrastructure began a few years later with a requirement to leave two-thirds of the area undeveloped to enhance the neighborhood's historical sites and to maintain a home for the deer, bear, wild turkeys, geese, mountain lions, squirrels, foxes, coyotes and numerous other flora and fauna that have called the valley home for centuries.
Homes built here are a mix or traditional and contemporary styling with prices ranging from the mid to high $200s for older homes needing updating into million dollar properties with stunning locations and views. Located within the community is the historical Manor House restaurant and an equestrian center. Access to C470 is convenient and there is grocery shopping, restaurants, a business park and post office within 15 minutes of most locations. Recreational facilities include clubhouses, pools, tennis courts, sports fields, hiking and biking trails.
This area is unincorporated Jefferson County with a mailing address of Littleton. (The incorporated City of Littleton is located a considerable distance east of this location.) Some of the schools with their state ratings are Bradford Primary (Excellent), Deer Creek Middle School (Excellent) Chatfield High School (High).
